Understanding Abdominoplasty: Your Guide to a Flatter, Toned Tummy
An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that contours the abdomen, resulting in both functional and cosmetic benefits. It most often consists of an incision along the lower abdomen and an incision around the belly button. Diastasis repair (6-pack muscle separation repair) and flank liposuction are often both incorporated as parts of the procedure. An abdominoplasty allows for the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdominal region, resulting in a firmer, flatter midsection.
Benefits of Abdominoplasty
- Enhanced Body Contour: By removing excess skin and fat, an abdominoplasty provides a smoother, flatter abdominal shape.
- Boosted Self-confidence: A flatter abdomen without excess folds of skin can improve one's body image and make fitting into clothes easier.
- Muscle Tightening: The procedure can also help repair separated or weakened abdominal muscles, often experienced post-pregnancy.
- Flank contouring: Liposuction of prominent love handles can create a smoother silhouette.
- Abdominal wall defect repair: umbilical and/or ventral hernias are often encountered and repaired at the time of an abdominoplasty.

Tummy Tucks - Before & After
Types of Abdominoplasty
Mini Abdominoplasty: This procedure usually has a shorter incision along the lower abdomen and only addresses the skin along the lower abdomen well. Diastasis repair is limited if performed.
Standard Abdominoplasty: This addresses the skin laxity both above and below the umbilicus. Diastasis repair can be performed. Changes in the flank area are usually not as dramatic.
Extended Abdominoplasty: The extended incision length usually runs from one side of the table to the other with the patient lying down. This procedure allows for improved flank contour changes and diastasis repair. Both the upper and lower abdominal skin laxity are addressed.
Prone Extended Abdominoplasty: By carrying the incision onto the posterior torso, the contour improvements in the flanks can be even more aggressive. Liposuction of the flank area is performed while the patient is in a prone position. Upper & lower abdominal skin laxity and diastasis are all addressed.
Torsoplasty/ Extended Abdominoplasty: Instead of finishing the incision along the flanks, the excisional component of the skin removal involves 360 degrees of the torso. In addition to the abdominoplasty, the lateral thighs and buttocks are lifted.
Fleur-de-lis Abdominoplasty: This procedure involves the same incisions associated with an abdominoplasty but also a vertical incision along the midline of the abdomen. The main advantage of this surgical approach is that the circumferential and horizontal skin laxity is also improved.
Postoperative Abdominoplasty Restrictions:
- no strenuous activity for 2 weeks
- no lifting more than 15 pounds for 6 weeks
- wear abdominal compression garment for 3-6 weeks
- if drains are placed, they are usually in place for about about 1-2 weeks
Who's an Ideal Candidates for a Tummy Tuck?
- Individuals close to their ideal body weight but with sagging or loose abdominal skin.
- Those who have experienced significant weight loss, leading to excess skin.
- Mothers post-pregnancy seeking to restore their abdominal area.
