BUTTOCK LIFTS
The buttocks are usually lifted in one of two ways (sometimes both):
- Minimally Invasive Brazilian Butt Lift
- Surgical Buttock Lift
Brazilian Butt Lift
A BBL, or Brazilian Butt Lift, is a fat transfer to the buttocks. During this procedure, liposuction is performed to remove fat from areas of relative excess followed by adding this fat back to the buttocks.
Some patients opt to add fat to improve buttock shape, increase volume or both. Like all fat transfers, not every fat cell that is transferred is expected to survive. The anticipated survival rate is about 50-80%.
The average BBL transfers about 500-1000ml per buttock. The limiting factors include how much space is available in the recipient buttocks and how much fat is available for donation.
Surgical Buttock Lift
The buttocks can also be lifted by placing an incision above the buttocks and removing a wedge of skin or skin and fat. This incision can be hidden along the underwear line. A surgical buttock lift is also often combined with an abdominoplasty as the posterior half of a torsoplasty.
Is a BBL safe?
Whereas every surgery has its own theoretical risks, there are techniques that help improve the safety of this procedure. Dr. Robey incorporates these safety recommendations during all of her BBLs.
- Fat is only injected into the subcutaneous plane. Injecting fat into the gluteus muscles can allow for more volume to be transferred, but it is not worth the increased risk of potentially injecting fat into the gluteal veins.
- Fat is injected with a larger diameter cannula so that the cannula is more likely to push around and not into blood vessels
- A low pressure system is utilized to inject the fat so as not to force the fat into undesirable areas, like the gluteal veins.
- The utilized cannula is not overly flexible to bend into an undesirable location
- Board certified status of surgeon with knowledge and experience.
What are the postoperative BBL restrictions?
- No strenuous activity x 2 weeks. Avoid activities that increase your heart rate and blood pressure during this period, like exercise.
- No sitting or laying on buttocks x 2 weeks. After 2 weeks of time, you can sit/lay on your buttocks for 10-15 minutes at a time. Booty pillows that distribute the weight on the posterior thighs can be used right away.
- It's okay to shower right away. Don't soak in water for 2 weeks.
What are the postoperative surgical buttock lift restrictions?
- No strenuous activity x 2 weeks
- No soaking in tub water x 2 weeks
For patients with massive weight loss, droopy buttocks and upper thigh tissue can be addressed through a traditional butt lift procedure. Incisions are typically placed along the top portion of the bikini line across the lower back; excess tissue is excised, allowing the buttocks and upper thigh to be lifted into a more aesthetically pleasing location. A traditional buttock lift is ideal for patients wishing to maintain their current gluteal volume with a tighter overlying skin envelope.
